Martin I

Pope (q.v.) from 649-653 who in 649 condemned Constans II's (q.v.) edict (Typos) that forbade any discussion about Monotheletism (q.v.), indeed any discussion about Christ's divine energies and wills. As a result of the pope's action, Constans II sought to depose and arrest him. Constans was able to do so in 653, when the pope was charged with supporting Olympios, the rebel exarch of Ravenna (qq.v.). The senate in Constantinople (qq.v.) found Martin guilty of high treason, and Constans II exiled him to Cherson (q.v.) in 654. He died there a year later.
